Improve Your Vertical Leap

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Is increasing your vertical leap one of your goals? This is an important aspect of any athletes game, and most are looking to improve it. Jumping is a critical factor in quite a few sports. Volleyball is an example of such a sport, as is football, basketball and sprinting. The skills required in jumping can be helpful in almost any sport, even those where jumping doesn’t seem to be a factor. How about that baseball player who has to leap to catch the ball, or even a tennis player jumping to slam that high ball. It is important then to improve your vertical leap so that you can be the best player you can be in whatever sport you choose to be in. Also, in case you’re interested, my favorite way to jump higher is with the P90X workout, it’s excellent.

When you want to improve your vertical leap, you have to have strong and agile leg muscles. Therefore, strength training is as vital as exercises to help with your speed and agility. Weight training is important and should be incorporated into your workout, and be sure to focus on your leg muscles in these workouts. You will find that you have more endurance and can jump higher the stronger your legs get. In your workouts, strike a good balance between training for speed, flexibility and strength.

Over training can be a mistake many athletes make as they try to improve vertical jump. Of course, you don’t want to under train either, but when you over train you risk hurting yourself or burning yourself out. You should rest two or three days per week. Your workouts will see more benefit with this rest time for your muscles to rebuild and recuperate. A forced extended break is in your future if you consistently train with no breaks. In a rush to see results, many will over train, but you will see better long term results by allowing your body to rest.

Your footwear can be a major contributing factor for increasing vertical leap. For ideal performance, you should make it a point to have the right clothing. Aside from comfortable, loose fitting athletic wear, you should pay special attention to your athletic shoes. If you are a basketball player, be sure you have a decent pair of basketball training shoes.

If you participate in a different sport, obtain footwear that is designed for that sport. This is something that a lot of individuals are aware of, yet they still fail to pay enough attention to. Wearing the wrong shoes that are falling apart of fit poorly will not only reduce your vertical leap, but they can also hurt your feet. Then again, when you have suitable shoes, you won’t have to be as concerned about your feet, and they will give you the ability to jump higher without trying as hard. Many exercises are available for you to improve your vertical leap. The consistency of your workout then is very important. Unless you want to loose what you have gained, then be sure not to take long breaks from your training, and it is ok to have variety in your workout as well. Being able to jump is essential in many sports, and you will find that your overall performance improves as you work on this skill. Remember that, while you can sometimes increase your vertical leap quickly, your real goal should be to make steady progress over time. Your improvements will be visible to both your team mates and your opponents if you focus on what we have presented here.
