NCAA Basketball Final Four - Forecasting The Winners

May 15th, 2012

Each year from mid-March till early April, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) which rules Division One varsity athletics holds their annual men’s basketball championship tournament. Starting with 4 16 team fields and playing down to the champ in each of four separate divisions, the leftover four teams have been given the moniker of the Final Four. This year’s Final Four competition begins on March 31 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and so far the journey to Scotch Street has been a wacky one. The top seed in every one of the four divisions, North Carolina, Michigan State, Kentucky and Syracuse, have all advanced from their first two contests with no real surprises in the NCAA Tournament Odds thus far.

Nonetheless in a few heavily favored matchups, the underdog has gone from anonymity to prominence with huge wins over their Goliath-like opponents. In a contest format where the top seed plays the lowest seed, the number 2 seed plays the number 15 seed and that kind of stuff in both the West and South divisions this year’s March Madness proved especially frustrating for the number 2 Duke Blue Devils and number 2 Missouri Tigers. The number 15 seeded Norfork State Spartans outlasted Missouri, and the 15th ranked Lehigh Mountain Hawks took down the Blue Demons, which many varsity basketball fans had scheduled to go all the way. The number 13-ranked Ohio Bobcats also beat the number 4-ranked Michigan Spartans in a stunner, and have advanced to the Sweet 16.

After that first round of upsets was over, including the 12 seeded VCU Rams thrashing number 5 Wichita State and number 12 South Florida outlasting the number 5 Church Owls, upsets were uncommon. In the second round, among the 32 remaining teams, North Carolina State beat the heavily favored and third-seeded Georgetown Hoyas despite carrying an 11 seed in the only enormous upset. What started as 64 groups is now down to the Sweet 16, which starts March 22. With the top seeds from the South, West, East and Midwest divisions still in the running and playing well, we are going to be forced to see some more upsets if the Final Four is not going to contain four number 1 seeds.

This has only occurred one time in the history of college basketball, in 2008, when top seeds North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis and UCLA all met in the Final Four. So , who do you like? Are you going to be cheering along for a heavy outside bet or a heavy fave?
